I started paddling when I was 39 and I am not sporty or adrenaline fuelled!
I like playing sessions and introducing families and have only done pool rolls (with varying success).
I would recommend you get yourself registered with a local club and try different kayaks - here is the link to Canoe England /BCU.

Or check out your local Scouts and see if they run courses or sessions.

Scouts and Kayaks

Which reminds me . . .
Two Scouts were on a water-based expedition; they chose a kind of tandem kayak, you know, two paddlers with a bit in the middle that they used as a table of sorts. It was a cold night sitting in a kayak and the two intrepid scouts were chilly. Being good scouts they were, of course, prepared for such an eventuality. So, carefully, they decided a campfire was in order to raise their spirits and warm the cockles of their hearts but when they lit a fire in the craft it sank -- proving once and for all that you can't have your kayak and heat it, too.

I have no idea what Dr Stu. would say about the ppsychological element to this, but as a layman, I would say that when you have a bad experience, the best thing that you can do is go back and challenge that experience.

As a teenager I nearly drowned after slipping on a dive boad and falling about 16ft, smashing my head on the side of the pool and falling unconscious into the water. (I owe my life to Billy Reid, my friend at the time, who jumped in, got me to the side and hauled me out and put me in recovery position before the lifeguards knew what had happened).

Several weeks later, I forced myself back up onto that board and made the dive again and again because if I hadn't, I'd never have done it.

I made the mistake of giving up kayaking after a bad swim on the Clyde at Lanark Bridge - I still get shakey on moving water today.

I wrote a car off on a racetrack in the USA, I walked away but it could so easily have been fatal. As soon as I could I got back in a car on a racetrack.

I find that the best way of dealing with issues is to face them. Your mileage may vary.

I agree Ewan, it's best to go back as soon as possible, but it also needs understanding from those with you, and that's not so easy. I suspect that for a few of us, it's not so much trust in ourself or equipment, but trust in others.

Definitely. As another example, I'm a bit claustrophobic and have had a few scary (though not in any way dangerous) experiences getting a bit wedged in caves, so there are only a few specific people who I really trust (both to know my limits and not to push me too hard if I say no to something) that I will go caving with.

Lynne, if you can get to Northgate Arena, I'll teach you how to roll. £4 a session and plenty of incredibly experienced coaches on hand. :-)

That sounds like a good plan, you're on.

Let me know when you're going - not until Sept though - at least.

thanks

Lynn

It doesn't start again till september. Runs during term time, every monday and tuesday evening, 9 till 10, or Sunday evenings 5-6 6-7 or 7-8 though think you've got to pay the sunday ones in blocks so evenings are easier :-)
PM me when you're feeling up to it :-)
